Portland Cement and Pozzolan are Better Together!

The major use of pozzolan has been well identified and well documented. Pozzolan is acknowledged to be the preeminent product in the industry. When Lassenite is used with Portland cement, the calcium hydroxide (hydrated lime), liberated during hydration, slowly combines with the pozzolan, forming a highly cementitious compound contributing to strength, water tightness, and other properties.

BENEFITS - Simply put, a mixture of pozzolan and cement is better than cement alone. During Portland cement hydration lime is freely given off ready to leach away. By itself lime is harmful but in the presence of Lassenite-SR the free lime reacts with the pozzolan to form a cementitious material that adds strength and impermeability to the resulting structure.

LONG-TERM BENEFITS OF LASSENITE SR POZZOLAN

  • Economic savings

Architectural Projects

For the architectural concrete industry, the company produces Lassenite SR Pozzolan which provides designers a method of obtaining desirable earth-tone colors in precast concrete panels, block, columns and similar applications while simultaneously replacing a portion of the cement normally used.

BENEFITS - The Pozzolanic properties of pozzolan can turn ordinary concrete into a superior concrete offering a more durable, strong and economical product.

Benefits of Long Valley Pozzolan

  • Strongly resists sulfate and corrosive attack
  • Improves durability and rebar seal
  • Better finish ability and pump ability
  • Curtails efflorescence, watertight
  • Reduces segregation and bleeding
  • Compatible with all admixtures
  • Qualified in construction of nuclear vessels

The addition of Pozzolan N (natural) to a concrete mix can significantly improve the properties of fresh and hardened concrete. Pozzolan has been considered primarily for hydraulic structures such as dams, canals, and pipelines. However the lightweight structure of pozzolan N is 38 lbs.cu.ft. as opposed to Portland cement at 94 lbs. cu. ft. Standard admixture of 50% pozzolan N (365 day cylinder tests) yields 6,200 lbs. /sq. in. and Fly Ash with a 20% typical mixture yields 2,300 lbs. / sq. in.

Pozzolan improves the Strength of Concrete

  • good quality paste
  • low water-cement ratios
  • improved durability
  • improved plasticity
  • improved workability
  • ease of placement
  • ease of finishing
  • continues to strengthen over time

Pozzolan improves the Durability of Concrete

  • improved watertightness
  • low volume change
  • resistance to weathering
  • resistance to freeze-thaw
  • resistance to adverse chemical reactions
  • resistance to leaching
  • resistance to salt in soils and ground water.

Pozzolan is cost effective

  • improves ease of handling
  • improves ease of placement
  • improved workability and finishing
  • costs less than cement.

Well Cements

Lassenite SR has been used within the oil and gas industry since the late 1970’s. Lassenite SR pozzolan/Portland cement slurry mixes have had a wide usage under diversified field conditions. Proven in thousands of wells and supported by extensive laboratory data, use an additive in well cementing offers many advantages.

BENEFITS - Western Pozzolan’s Lassenite SR is the Field-Proven Well Cementing Additive

CUT DRILLING COSTS

Drilling is expensive. It’s also high risk. Payoff comes when your find reaches market. The trick is to minimize costs and LOE while maximizing well production. One way is to include Western Pozzolan’s Lassenite SR pozzolan in your slurry design. The formulation costs less and you produce a more durable well-cementing job. Lassenite SR Pozzolan cement slurries have proven their worth in thousands of oil and gas wells.

IMPROVED WORKABILITY

For workability, it would be hard to find a better well cementing additive. Lassenite SR pozzolan is three times finer that Portland cement, therefore it works better as a lubricant than cement. The strain on the pumping equipment is reduced, pumping pressures can be decreased and voids are filled efficiently. Extreme temperatures are reached at great depths. Lassenites’s natural Pozzolan lowers the heat of hydration, improving the slurry’s setting time.

BETTER WELL SEALING

Simply put, a mixture of pozzolan and cement is better than cement alone. During Portland cement hydration, lime is freely given off, ready to leach away. By itself lime is harmful but in the presence of Lassentite SR the free lime reacts with the pozzolan to form a cementitious material that adds strength and impermeability to the resulting well structure. The well is better sealed minimizing the migration of fluids through the casing and more strongly resists internal and external pressures, providing the best kind of casing protection.

RESISTS CORROSION

Lassenite SR is capable of resisiting corrosion and attack from sulphate-laden ground waters often encountered in oil and gas drilling. It is compatible with most cement additives and can be blended to meet awide range of well conditions. It is available in bulk and one cu. ft. bags.
